Current News

From Florence Babb, past AFA President:
[I am] working on the AFA archives, a process of cataloguing the boxes of AFA materials from over the "first 20 years" so that they will be useful to those wanting to access them, do research on early feminist anthropology, and so on. At our AFA board meeting in November, we agreed to set aside a small part of our budget to support an archivist here in Gainesville, who is now undertaking the work. If any of you have AFA-related materials from the past on hand (this will include past presidents and officers, but others as well), would you please be in touch with me (fbabb@wst.ufl.edu) or Traci Yoder (tlyoder88@yahoo.com), the archivist. This might include letters, meeting notes and minutes, conference information, and so on.

Gender of Globalization: Women Navigating Cultural and Economic Marginalities
A new collection of articles by various authors, including several from AFA, is coming out in Spring 2008. Edited by Nandini Gunewardena & Ann Kingsolver (both of whom served as AFA officers), the articles "employ feminist, ethnographic methods to examine what free trade and export processing zones, economic liberalization, and currency reform mean to women in Argentina, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Ghana, the United States, India, Jamaica, and many other places." Available from SAR Press.

Capitalizing on Catastrophe
Nandini Gunewardena has also co-edited book on disaster assistance, Capitalizing on Catastrophe: Neoliberal Strategies in Disaster Reconstruction (part of the Globalization and the Environment series). Published by Rowman & Littlefield, the book has just come out.
