Meeting Minutes
Thursday, Nov.16, 2006
San Jose McEnery Convention Center
Welcome and Introduction:
AFA President Florence Babb thanked board members who are completing
their terms (Pam Stone, Dorothy Hodgeson, Dana-Ain Davis, Heidi Kelley)
and welcomed new members (Jane Henrici, Martin Manalansan, Angele Smith,
Ara Wilson). She also introduced President-elect Cheryl Rodriguez, new
Secretary Meena Khandelwal, and new Treasurer Evelyn Blackwood.
Activities and Events at 2006 AAA Meetings:
Mary Weismantel served as AFA Program Chair (with co-chair Gayatri Reddy)
on this year’s program. Handout of panels for 2006 AAA meetings.
Announcement of joint reception with AFA/AES/SCA/SAW tomorrow (Friday).
State of AFA:
Budget is healthy. Membership is 840; it is stable, but we would like
to see it grow.
In terms of budget, we are concerned about AnthroSource. Evelyn Blackwood
indicated that student membership has increased in last three years,
that AFA has not overspent, and that any member may request information
on the AFA budget.
Suzanne Baker has done a fabulous job with the AFA website.
Colleen Morgan is our new Listserv Coordinator (replacing Kathleen Sterling)
and will be adding a blog to the AFA website.
We have two awards, Forman and Hurston, and would like people to help
advertise them.
We help pay for the expenses of the meetings, the reception, and travel
for some officers.
We are interested in developing a scholarship competition for graduate
students.
All members are urged to join the listserve (by going to the AFA website),
because members are not automatically added to the listserve.
If we download articles through AnthroSource (through our university
libraries, not through AAA membership), then sections receive a small
amount of money.
Please send in material for AN about our research or a politically
timely topic. Rebecca Upton (column editor) said that we would like
more people to send in materials, especially students. The listserve
is a good means of communication, so we encourage everyone to join.
A member indicated that some people may not wish to join a listserve,
so all vital information should also appear on the website. All agreed
this is a good idea.
Cheryl Rodriguez attended Section Assembly last night as President-Elect.
She indicated that the big issue was AnthroSource and that the Executive
Board has established a reserve of $75,000 to give loans to help sections
pay for for AnthroSource. There was a discussion of long-term implications
of this scheme. The other issue, she noted, is the Governance Commission
Report and a desire for greater participation of sections. Issue is
representation and actual voting system. Several people at Section Assembly
meeting spoke in favor of one section, one vote system rather than compressed
weighted system. Member Christa Craven mentioned that there is an open
forum tomorrow where AAA members can raise questions and voice concerns.
One idea, said Cheryl R, is to change the schedule of meetings so that
Section Assembly meeting occurs before Executive Board meetings.
Presentation of Awards:
Cheryl Rodriguez, Forman Committee Chair, presented Sylvia Forman Prizes:
Christiana Croegaert (Northwestern U)—Graduate Prize
Victoria Luoang (U C Irvine)—Graduate Honorable Mention
Rebecca Tarlau (U Michigan)—Undergraduate Prize

Heidi Kelley, Hurston Committee Chair, presented Zora Neale Hurston
Travel Awards:
Julie Grigsby (U Texas Austin)
Lea McChesney (Ph.D NYU)
Judith Singleton (Northwestern U)
2007 AAA Meetings:
In 2007, AFA will have its 20th anniversary. Voices,
our occasional publication, has been a great resource. It is now published
on the AFA website. Susan Hyatt is completing her term, and we now need
a new editor of Voices. We could publish a special issue on a AAA panel,
so contact us if you would like to propose a theme and act as guest
editor of a special issue.
AAA theme for next year is “Difference, (In)equality, and Justice.”
Faye Harrison is the Program Chair. Florence suggested that we aim for
presidential panels as well as invited sessions.
Gayatri Reddy, AFA Program Chair for 2007, helped lead discussion as
we brainstormed about panels for next year:
Sexual violence (Srimati Basu and Peggy Sanday)
Gendering the Border (Louise Lamphere)
Democratic Citizenship and Legal Citizenship (Sandra Fava-Silva)
Male and Female Sexual Abuse
Public Interest Feminist Anthropology
Shift from Activist Feminist Anthro to Public Feminist Anthro (Florence)
Members should send ideas out on AFA listserve.
New Business:
We would like to encourage more participation from members. Members
can nominate President-Elect for next elections. Contact Deborah Crooks
with nominations.
Report on Taskforce on Middle East Anthropology and practical handbook
(flyer circulated).
