UCB Resources
| Geographic Information Science Center (GISC) The Center for GIS on campus. Distributes software under the campus site license, and holds courses for learning about GIS and how to use GIS software. | ||
| Research Program in Environmental Planning and Geographic Information Systems (REGIS) Research program devoted to developing GIS tools for environmental applications. Distributes GRASS software and tools. | ||
| Guide to GIS Resources on the Internet A site with numerous links, with the categories of: Directories, Data Resources, Tools and Training, and Other. | ||
| Center for the Assessment and Monitoring of Forest and Environmental Resources (CAMFER) This center is focused on developing theory and method for integrating maps, spatial data, etc. in the analysis of natural resources. Sponsors some lectures on campus, and allows use of labs and equipment for a fee. | ||
| Applied Environmental Geographic Science A research laboratory within the UCB College of Environmental Design. Has a number of good project pages. | ||
| Institute of Urban and Regional Development Uses GIS in the study of urban and regional development. Some projects focus on the urban areas of the San Francisco Bay Area. |
Software
| ESRI Makers of ArcView, ArcInfo, Map Objects, Atlas GIS, and other programs and utilities. Also offers on-line training modules (some free, some for a fee). Some software can be ordered via their on-line store. | ||
| GRASS GIS "GRASS is a raster-based GIS, vector GIS, image processing system, graphics production system, data management system, and spatial modeling system." It's a public-domain system for UNIX (and Linux) platforms, and can be downloaded from this site. A Windows version is available for a fee from another developer. | ||
| BASINS An ArcView-based GIS package developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, mainly for the analysis of watersheds. Can be downloaded for free, but requires ArcView software. | ||
| MicroImages Home of TNTMips, a powerful but expensive GIS application with extensive vector and raster image processing capabilities. Provides a free hobbled version known as TNTLite. | ||
| IDRISI GIS and image processing software, mainly raster-based analysis. Site includes a GIS bibliography and a list of useful links. | ||
| PCI Geomatics Produces a range of software applications for remote sensing, photogrammetry, cartography, and spatial analysis. A freeware application for viewing remote sensing images, Image Handler, is available for free download. | ||
| Intergraph Makers of GeoMedia and MGS GIS software packages. Provides free GeoMedia Viewer for viewing GIS data/images, and has some free sample data (USA) and images. | ||
| Golden Software: Surfer and Grapher Not exactly GIS software, but Surfer is commonly used by archaeologists to produce maps that are then used in GIS applications. |
Data Sources
| US Geo Data USGS source for downloading Digital Line Graph (DLG) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) files for the US via FTP. Includes user's guide for each type of file. | ||
| Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Clearinghouse On-line clearinghouse that allows searches of numerous archives. | ||
| California State Lands Commission GIS Provides a lot of digital map data for California (7.5 minute quads in DRG format, as well as 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 quads), along with maps, data, and software relating to natural resources in the state. | ||
| California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES) Provides a lot of environmental geographic data, categorized in several ways. Probably the place to start if you focus on California. |
Archaeology/Anthropology and GIS
| Archaeology Resources - University of Sydney Includes a listing of archaeologists throughout the world who use GIS, and links to and descriptions of archaeological projects in Australia and New Zealand that use GIS. Links to the VISTA (Virtual Institute for Spatial Technologies in Archaeology) project page, which has resources for teaching about GIS and computer applications in archaeology. Also provides some GIS and other software utilities with links to other GIS software sites. | ||
| Archaeological Mapping Specialists A company that "specializes in geographic information systems, remote sensing, photogrammetry, and computer cartography to produce custom maps and spatial analyses" for archaeologists. AMS is also a distributor of MicroImages GIS software (TNTMips). |
GIS Jobs Listings
| BAAMA's GIS Employment Information in the Bay Area Links to GIS jobs in the SF Bay Area and links to other GIS jobs lists. | ||
| GISC UC Berkeley Listings of jobs (including academic positions) and links to other GIS jobs sites. | ||
| Archaeological Mapping Specialists (see above category) AMS will be hiring people in early 2000 to help on projects (mostly digitizing). |
Other GIS Resources
| Bay Area Automated Mapping Association (BAAMA) "The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)...a non-profit, professional organization which provides bi-monthly forums for topics relating to automated mapping, geographic information systems (GIS) and related topics." Lots of links to GIS related sites and sources of information and data. |
