During the 1994-95 year, Dr. Love's primary activity was continuing his
research at Ujuxte, on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. During January of
1995 he conducted the first excavations at the site, in collaboration with
the students and faculty from Sonoma State University and the Universidad
del Valle de Guatemala.
Excavations at the main ceremonial group at the site located an uncarved
monumental altar, dating to the Late Preclassic period, and a small ceremonial
cache associated with the last placement of the stone. Excavations in a
residential zone near the site periphery found good domestic garbage, including
ceramics, lithics, and carbonized botanical remains.
At the conclusion of the brief excavation season began study of the excavated
materials at the Universidad del Valle. Students from the university also
helped in the detailed coding of ceramics from surface collections are currently
being used to formulate the strategy for the more extensive excavations
that will begin next year with funding from the National Science Foundation.
