No. 59 of the Contributions of the University of California Archaeological Research Facility, Berkeley
During three expeditions to the Mussau Islands of Papua New Guinea, an international team led by Professor Patrick V. Kirch investigated Lapita and post-Lapita sites spanning three and one-half millennia. These sites included Talepakemalai, the earliest and largest Lapita settlement yet recorded, whose waterlogged sediments yielded new evidence for stilt-house architecture and for arboriculture. Other sites range from rockshelters to post-Lapita open shell middens. The first in a series of three volumes that will present the full results of the Mussau Project.
Volume 1 includes an introduction to the Project's aims and methods, the environmental and cultural background, definitive site and excavation reports, and a comprehensive analysis of all radiocarbon dates.
