Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize
for Outstanding Anthropological Scholarship by a Student
on a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered Topic

The Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize is presented each year by the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists to a student in acknowledgement of outstanding work on a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered topic in anthropology. To be eligible for consideration, work should have been completed since September 2003 while the applicant was still enrolled as a student. Papers should be no longer than 40 pages, double-spaced and typed. Published papers will not be accepted. The Prize includes a cash award of $300. Submissions are encouraged from graduate students in any of the four fields of anthropology.

Criteria for the Award:

  • Use of relevant l/g/b/t/q anthropological theory and literature;
  • Potential for contribution to and advancement of queer studies and our understanding of sexualities worldwide;
  • Attention to difference (gender, class, race, ethnicity, nation);
  • Originality;
  • Organization and coherence; and
  • Timeliness.

Deadline for submission was August 1, 2005.
