Patrick Vinton Kirch, the Director of the Oceanic Archaeology Laboratory, holds the Class of 1954 Professorship in Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley (a chair endowed by Berkeley’s Class of 1954). Born and raised in Hawai'i, Prof. Kirch studied Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, and at Yale University where he received his Ph.D. in 1975. From 1975-1984 Kirch served on the staff of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu, leading expeditions to the Solomon Islands and Tonga, and carrying out field research in the Hawaiian Islands. In 1984, Kirch became the Director of the Burke Museum in Seattle, Washington, and Associate Professor at the University of Washington. In 1989, he was recruited to the faculty at the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to his professorship, Kirch is the Curator of Oceanic Archaeology in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, and served as the Hearst Museum’s Director from 1999-2002.

Prof. Kirch has conducted extensive archaeological and ethnoecological research throughout the Pacific Islands with many expeditions over the past three decades. His fieldwork has encompassed the Mussau Islands (Papua New Guinea), Palau and Yap, the Marshall Islands (Arno Atoll), the Solomon Islands (Kolombangara, Vanikoro, Tikopia, and Anuta), Futuna and Alofi, 'Uvea (Wallis Is.), American Samoa (the Manu'a Islands), Niuatoputapu and Vava'u (Tonga), Mangaia (Cook Is.), Mo’orea and Mangareva (French Polynesia), Rapanui, and the Hawaiian Islands (sites on Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Maui, and Hawai'i).

Prof. Kirch's research interests include the origins of Oceanic peoples and the chronology of Pacific settlement, the Lapita cultural complex, evolution of the Polynesian chiefdoms, human impacts to island ecosystems, and the development of a phylogenetic approach in historical anthropology.

Prof. Kirch has received a number of honors and awards in recognition of his research and scholarly activities. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He is a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, and an Honorary life member of the Prehistoric Society of Great Britain. He has been a Professeur Invité at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, and serves as a Distinguished Honorary Associate of the Bishop Museum (Honolulu), and a Trustee of the California Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Sciences awarded him the John J. Carty Medal for the Advancement of Science, and the School of American Research conferred its J. I. Staley Prize on him for his book Anahulu (co-authored with Marshall Sahlins).
