Lapita and its Transformations in Near Oceania: Archaeological Investigations in the Mussau Islands, Papua New Guinea, 1985-88. Volume I, Introduction, Stratigraphy, Chronology. Archaeological Research Facility Contribution No. 59. Berkeley: University of California. ISBN 1-882744-11-X. The first of a projected three-volume set of monographs detailing the results of the Mussau Archaeological Project. Volume I provides an introduction to the Mussau Project, background on the local environmental and cultural setting, definitive site reports on all excavated sites, and a comprehensive listing and discussion of the many radiocarbon dates obtained. Much of this volume deals with the important Talepakemalai (ECA) site, excavated between 1985-88, which yielded one of the most important assemblages of Lapita materials yet uncovered. |
